Gesture & Structure

Capturing the essentials

Notes: There is 1 assignment highlighted in blue on this page. The assignment includes at least 3 pages of artwork.

Assignment: Gesture & Structure

Materials:

  • Newsprint
  • Pencils (Colored Pencil or Regular)

Resources:

  • The videos in this post
  • The Gesture Drawings Examples Slides in Schoology Resources

Goal:

  • Our goal is to use use gesture drawing techniques to create dynamic and lively figure drawings. Then we will apply an additional quick layer of structure.
  • By drawing quickly we can capture the most important aspects of the pose without over-rendering details.

Essential Reading:

  • The Gesture Drawings Examples slides in Schoology Resources are important to gain a solid understanding of what we are doing. Read all the information in them and study the drawings.

Instructions:

  • This assignment will include a minimum of three pages of artwork.
  • Start with quick drawings that take no more than one to two minutes each. Keep your line work loose and apply light to moderate pencil pressure– we’ll be laying in darker lines in the next stage of the assignment.
  • I recommend using a light colored pencil.
  • The drawings and videos I made below are only examples. I encourage you to try your own poses and approach to gesture drawings.
  • Draw at least three figures per page.

Example of all three pages completed:

Gesture Set 1

Gesture Set 2

Gesture Set 3

Next Steps:

  • After you finish three pages of loose gesture drawings we are going to add a quick layer of refinement to each drawing by bringing some structure in.
  • I recommend using a darker colored pencil for this stage.
  • We’re still working quickly and trying to avoid over-rendering!
  • Make changes to your drawing as needed in this stage! Notice the adjustments that I made to the drawings below:
