Vignette Illustration

Final Project!

For the post on what a vignette is, see this link.

Notes: There is 1 assignment highlighted in blue on this page. The assignment consists of at least 1 page of sketch work and 1 page of final presentation artwork (2 Pages Total).

Final Assignment 1: Vignette Illustration

Materials:

  • Paper for rough sketches and exploration
  • Card Stock for final
  • Pencils (Colored Pencil & Regular)
  • Pens (Inking some of the work is optional)

Resources:

  • The directions and images in this post
  • Your World Building Mood Board for inspiration and ideas

Goal:

  • You will use all of your notes, sketches, character exploration, sketches of settings/locations, and object/props drawings that you have created this semester to develop and execute an idea for a vignette illustration.
  • You will create at least one page of rough exploration sketches before creating a finished piece of presentation level artwork.
  • Presentation Level Artwork: Art that is penciled, inked, and colored.

Requirements:

  • The focus on this illustration will be on characters interacting with each other. You must have at least two characters interacting.
  • You must include some props and objects.
  • Fill the space on your paper! Tiny drawings surrounded by lots of empty space will not be accepted.
  • The final art must be inked with pen and colored with colored pencils (or any other materials you might want to use for coloring).

Examples of Exploration Sketches:

I chose to use these two characters for my vignette:

My illustration will feature:

  • Two characters interacting.
  • Various objects and props.
  • A Scenario: After a day of adventure, my two characters sit down at the local inn with steaming mugs of cocoa to discuss their plans.

Process: Starting with basic shapes and building up detail in layers:

Final Artwork:

After developing the idea in an exploration sketch, you will create your final art on card stock. You may use a light panel to trace your pencils on to the card stock.

Pencils: remember to pencil lightly:

Ink Line Art: We are not just tracing over the pencil lines with pen– you are creating the final line art on top of your pencil art. That means you are still engaged with the process, making changes, and adjusting for the differences between pencil line work and ink line work:

Color: After you gently erase your pencil lines you can start coloring. If you use colored pencils make sure to mix and blend your colors to create unique custom colors and blends. You may also use markers, gel pens, or any other coloring tools you have. You can also scan or photograph your final ink line work on paper and import it into a drawing & painting app of your choosing for the coloring stage:
